What is a PIN Code? Decoding India's 6 digits
The 6 digits
PIN = Postal Index Number, introduced in 1974. Each digit narrows the geography: digit 1 = zone (1-9: north, west, south, east, northeast...), digits 1-2 = sorting district/circle, digit 3 = district hub, digits 4-6 = the exact delivery post office.
Worked example
110001 - '1' = Delhi/North zone, '11' = Delhi sorting circle, '110' = central Delhi hub, '001' = Connaught Place HO. Once you know the pattern, a PIN tells you roughly where any address sits.
Functional series
Army PINs start with 9 (APS - Army Postal Service). Large cities have dense 3-digit clusters; rural districts spread wide. New offices get slotted into the existing grid as India Post expands.
Finding a PIN fast
Use our pincode search - by code to see the office, or by area name to find its code. For writing mail: PIN on the last line of the address, after the state, before the country.
PIN vs ZIP
Same idea, different names - India uses PIN, the US uses ZIP. If a form asks ZIP for an Indian address, enter the PIN.
